Rhododendron vs. Azalea

I have been looking for what seperates Azaleas from Rhododendron. They are
both in the genus Rhododendron, but what features actually seperate them??

I usually can tell by the leaves, with Rhododendron usually being smooth and
glossier, and lacking hairs. Could the leaves be one of the seperating
features?

Thank you very much for any light you can shed,

Scott
