In the deserts in Israel they used the polymers with young transplants to
supply their water needs for the first 30 to 45 days.  If I remember
correctly, the polymer was in half gallon containers which they split when
it was placed into the soil.  The claimed advantage was that the contained
water did not get adsorbed by the soil and become unavailable nor did it
evaporate.  Maybe it must be used correctly and in a proper environment.  An
open mind means information can travel in both directions.
