g'day ceriod+1,

i would believe that brian is talking about the elkhorn fern
'Platycerium bifircatum', i have grown many of these ferns over the
years.

and for brian,

as for dividing them it could be done at any time if you can control
temperature but early summer would be the best, it is also best to
only take sections that have mature fertile fronds, for better
results. put some well rotten leaf mulch or the like behind them.
