help: want an advice

Hello,

I am a Ph.D student majoring in computer science.

Recently, I got interested in the problems related to proteins, but feel
short of my knowledge on proteins.  

So, I have been poking around at library and bookstore to find 
basic references or textbooks.  But there are too many books and all
seems to be very technical.

I have undergraduate-level biology and chemistry knowledge.  
But what could be the next level references ?  
Could anyone suggest me any references or books through which I can get 
some basic knowledge on the proteins ?
