John, it may be dated but look for "Maintaining and Troubleshooting
HPLC Systems, A User's Guide" by Dennis Runser, John Wiley & Sons
ISBN 0-471-06479-3, 1981.

I'd also recommend getting a subscription to LC-GC, 'The Magazine
of Separation Science'.   It's free to qualified readers.
