Uncompressing PIR

Has anyone with a unix system (SUN, SGI, Alpha, RS/6K) managed to
uncompress the pir*.Z files at ncbi.nlm.nih.gov:/repository/PIR
for release 44 of the database?

If so, please point me to the necessary software.  The software at
nbrf.georgetown.edu fails, reporting that the files are in VMS private
mode.
