AIDS antibody tests, false positives etc

I'm not very familiar the methods involved in these tests (eg how are the
ELISA antibodies prepared etc), but the recent cases of false positives
described in this newsgroup seem to show that absolute faith in antibody
specificity is often not warrented. Are there lessons here regarding the
general applicability of immunological detection methods in protein
biochemistry?
