chitin in protists

Chitin has been reported from a number of different protists but some
questions remain if this represents "true" chitin or some other closely
related molecule. I have a paper by Herth et al. showing the presence of
chitin in a diatom, a chrysophyte, and a ciliate. Das and Gillin (1991)
demonstrate chitin in Entamoeba cysts, and a big review article by
Mulisch (1993 Europ. J. Protistol. 29:1-18) gives extensive references of
chitin in everything from Giardia to Euplotes.
