First Announcement
You are invited to participate in

THE 39th ANNUAL NORTHEAST ALGAL SYMPOSIUM

April 7-9, 2000
At the Whispering Pines Conference Center
W. Alton Jones Conference Campus, Rhode Island

Registration & Abstract deadlines will be Feb 16, 2000

The Northeast Algal Society will convene its annual meeting at the Whispering
Pines Conference Center, W. Alton Jones Conference Campus, Rhode Island on the
weekend of April 7-9, and will include a wide range of oral and poster
presentations pertaining to the many facets of phycology. As is always the
case, the 2000 NEAS meeting will provide a relaxed and informal environment
for
students and professionals alike to meet colleagues, exchange ideas and make
new friends. Awards will be presented for outstanding student poster and oral
presentations and funds to support student travel to the meeting are
available. NEAS members take great pride in our commitment to student
advancement and extend an especially warm welcome to all students. We are very
fortunate to have Dr. Sarah Gibbs as our distinguished speaker.

Whispering Pines Conference Center promises to be an outstanding venue for our
meetings. The conference center is described as an "Executive Retreat." It is
located on a 2300-acre campus of woods, fields and lakes. Before it became
part of the University of Rhode Island, it was a private hunting and fishing
retreat and has hosted dignitaries such as the King of Nepal and President
Eisenhower. For those coming from the south and west, travel times should be
shorter than it was to either Woods Hole or Plymouth, the sites of the
meetings
in the last few years. For those coming from the north, travel times may be a
little longer than to Plymouth, but shorter than those to Woods Hole. Travel
directions will be given in the 2nd announcement.

For those of you who need to apply to college travel programs for support
(especially students), we anticipate registration will be $50.00 (students
$5.00) and room/board to range from $80 per person (Commuter rate) to $200.00
per person (2 days lodging double occupancy, all meals (which are said to be
superb) including the banquet). If you need a more precise breakdown, please
contact Harold Hoops (Hoops at geneseo.edu) for more information.

The second circular will be available in early January and will include
registration forms, information on student travel support, and a call for
abstracts. All members of the society will automatically receive the second
announcement, abstract instructions and registration materials. If you are
not
currently an active member and wish to participate, please contact Morgan Vis
(vis-chia at ohio.edu) to be placed on the mailing list for the 2nd
announcement.

Included with this mailing is a call for nominations to the executive
committee. All members can contribute to a strong society by accepting a more
active role - your efforts can make a difference!
