TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES IN MEDICAL PARASITOLOGY AT
THE LONDON SCHOOL OF HYGIENE & TROPICAL MEDICINE

on leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis, schistosomiasis, and gut protozoa. Field
studies and trials are enabled by an extensive network of collaborations
with institutions across the world; while our excellently equipped modern
laboratories support cutting edge research in parasite immunology,
molecular biology, genetics, diagnostics and chemotherapy.
MSc in Medical Parasitology
There are still places available for this post-graduate course starting in
September 2003. Minimal entry requirements are a class 2:2 degree or
appropriate training and experience. This multidisciplinary course provides
core training in the theoretical and practical aspects of classical medical
parasitology covering the protozoan and metazoan parasites of humans and
the vectors which may transmit them. Students then choose six study units
from a wide range of options providing more specialised training in such
topics as diagnostic, molecular, immunological and control aspects of the
subject. A one week residential field course provides further practical
experience of parasite sampling and identification techniques. Much of the
summer is devoted to an extended project, often carried out in an endemic
country. The course provides both vocational training for clinicians,
medical parasitologists or teachers and initial training in research for
students wishing to enter PhD programmes.
