Subject: Acrylonitrile Peer Review Meeting

Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment (TERA) Announces Acrylonitrile
Peer Review Meeting

Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment (TERA) is pleased to announce that
a scientific peer review of a toxicological review and assessment for
acrylonitrile will be held on September 22-23, 2003. An independent Peer
Review Panel will review an assessment that includes derivation of a
reference dose, reference concentration, oral cancer slope factor and
inhalation unit risk, utilizing the best available science and current risk
assessment methods and guidelines. The Sapphire Group, Inc. on behalf of
the Acrylonitrile Group has prepared this document. The review will be held
at the University of Cincinnati and will be open to the public. This
independent peer review meeting is held under the International Toxicity
Estimates for Risk (ITER) program of Toxicology Excellence for Risk
Assessment (TERA). More information regarding the meeting, such as
logistics, agenda, and panel charge will be available on TERA's website:
http://www.tera.org/peer/an/anwelcome.htm .

Acrylonitrile is a building block chemical used to make numerous products,
including acrylic fiber for clothing, blankets, carpeting and other fabrics;
rugged plastics for computer and TV housings; and nitrile rubber for
oil-resistant hoses. Acrylonitrile is also identified as a Hazardous Air
Pollutant and as such the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must
consider the need to adopt various Clean Air Act regulations to reduce
emissions. The assessment presented builds on EPA's 1983 risk assessment
which is currently reflected in the Agency's Integrated Risk Information
System (IRIS), but also incorporates the significant new information and
methodologies that have been generated since that time. The objective of
this peer review is to review the updated scientific assessment of
acrylonitrile and the risk values presented.

TERA independently selected the panel of experts, which is made up of
scientists from industry, government, consulting, and academia. TERA
strives to create a balanced panel, while carefully identifying and managing
potential conflict of interest and bias issues. The meeting will be open to
the public, but seating is limited. Observers must pre-register via the
website (http://www.tera.org/peer/an/anwelcome.htm ).

This peer review is organized by TERA; a non-profit corporation dedicated to
the best use of toxicity data for risk assessment. More information about
the peer review program, including a list of approved reviewers and
summaries of discussions from previous meetings can be found at
http://www.tera.org/peer .
