International Rice Research Institute
Position Announcement for Virologist

IRRI is one of the 18 international centers supported by the 
Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).  
Its basic goal is to improve the well being of rice growers and 
consumers worldwide.  Institute scientists work in an 
interdisciplinary, creative and scientifically modern environment 
and in collaboration with colleagues and scientists in National 
Agricultural Research Systems (NARS).  The Institute, located 
in Los Banos, Philippines, about 70 km south of Manila, provides 
a supportive, multi-cultural living environment for families 
and children.  IRRI provides a gender-sensitive work environment 
and particularly welcomes women applicants.

Responsibilities of Virologist

To lead a research program addressing: virus variation 
and strain characterization; the identification and evaluation 
of virus resistance in rice germplasm; genetic analysis and 
gene tagging for virus resistance; and the evaluation 
of transgenic rice plants with virus resistance.  

To contribute to research efforts addressing the
epidemiology, virus-vector relations and integrated 
management of virus diseases.  

To work with plant breeders in developing virus resistant 
rice varieties.

To contribute to IRRI's degree and non-degree training 
programs.

To manage the institute's electron microscope facilities.

Required qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent in Plant Pathology or related discipline, 
specializing in plant virology.  At least two years of post-PhD 
experience in plant virus research.  Broad knowledge and/or 
experience in different aspects of plant virology, with emphasis 
on molecular approaches.  Demonstrated ability to conduct research 
on viral diseases of plants.  Excellent command of written and 
spoken English.

Desired qualifications
Experience with tropical plant diseases caused by viruses.  
Ability to manage electron microscope facilities.  
Experience in communicating and liaising with NARS and 
advanced institutes.  Demonstrated ability to work well 
as part of an interdisciplinary research team.

and retirement benefits.  The appointee will be based at 
IRRI headquarters in Los Banos and should be prepared to 
travel to rice-growing countries in Asia.  All IRRI 
appointments are on a fixed-term basis, with renewal 
contingent on performance.
