  Just a historical note:  The ability  to generate eukaryotic
  RNA viruses from clones was first carried out by transfecting
  a poliovirus cDNA into cells and viral progeny were formed.
  Later, The in vitro transcribed RNA was used.  It is more
  efficient, but it was first demonstrated with DNA.
