PROFESSOR OF MEDICAL VIROLOGY


The University of Cape Town is seeking a scholar of distinction for
appointment to the Chair of Medical Virology in the Department of
Medical Microbiology.  Criteria for appointment will be academic
excellence as measured by the general research record and relevant
publications, as well as successful supervision of candidates for
higher degrees.  Leadership in the development of teaching, research
and service aspects of the discipline will be important.  Involvement
in the field of HIV-AIDS will be a strong recommendation, as major
funding is becoming available for research in this area of Africa. The
Chairholder will take overall responsibility for a large diagnostic
laboratory managed by a senior clinical virologist.

The Faculty has plans to establish an Institute for Infectious Disease
and Immunology, in which the Professor of Medical Virology will play a
major role.

The full-time appointment will be made under University conditions of
service.  The remuneration package is negotiable and includes a 13th
cheque, generous car scheme and other benefits.  Details are available
