menopause

WEll -- it happened to me about 2 years ago -- fairly rapidly (3 pds over 7
mo, then a 9 month hiatus.then 1 ...). My gynecologist (O+) is in favor of
generic estradiol (not produced from pregnant mares) plus generic progesterone
-- she says that the risks of heart disease and osteoporosis outweigh the
risks of cancer dep on familial history and my mother is very osteoporotic
and no history of cancer on either side to speak of. I had 3 light periods
over about 45 days when I started on the pills and then everything settled
down. My hot flashes were pretty minimal as those things go before I started
so we are simply trying to work the Bayesian odds as best we can.

Good luck. Talk to your doctor and read as much as you can. It's not an easy
choice for some people (I had a student who came down with galloping breast
cancer 3 months after starting on the hormones) but there are risks on both
sides.) I am not the kind who attributes evil intentions or deliberate
ignorance to the (mostly male) medical profession -- I try to read, discuss,
and make the best decision for me.
