large vs. small schools

How about having the best of both worlds? I suggest Barnard College, the
women's undergraduate college of Columbia University. Although nominally
a women's college, there is complete cross-registration with Columbia,
opening up a vast array of courses. Male Columbia undergrads also take
courses at Barnard. The faculty is predominantly women and their charge
is to teach and mentor. Research opportunities, at Barnard and at
Columbia should be plentiful. Ten percent of the most recent class were
biology majors. Then there's New York City, a major plus to some, like
my daughter who's currently applying, perhaps a negative to others.
Apparently, the neighborhood IS safe. Just a plug for Alma Mommy -
I discovered many years after I was graduated that Barnard taught me to
think. Muriel Lederman, Biology Virginia Tech mljap at vtvm1.cc.vt.edu
