As you described, a project can generaly be split into three sections - the design of the experiment, the bench work (rattling glassware) and the writing. My boss and I came to an agreement years ago that whoever does 2 out of 3 is the first author. Since you designed the experiments and will be writing it up, the authorship should be you-John-PI.
