I'd like to recommend (for everyone!) Caplan's handbook for women in academia:

Paula J. Caplan. Lifting a ton of feathers:
a woman's guide for surviving in the academic world.
University of Toronto Press, 1993.

This is a great book which not only outlines common problems faced by
women on all rungs of the academic ladder, but also gives useful advice on
how to deal with them.  I have been very impressed by it.
