Susan-Don't blame the baby boom.  I got my PhD at the age of 35 and am a
lowly assistant professor, scrounging for money as you are.  AND I'm at a
smaller school by choice.  (I had been at a med school, but saw straight
away that PhD's are treated the same way as disposable pipet tips.)

Let's just frame the problem as established investigators vs. newly
independent ones.
