Position Title: Postdoctoral Fellow
Location: Diabetes Research Laboratory, Simon Fraser University,
Vancouver, British Columbia
Salary and Conditions: According to current MRC rates
Position Description: The primary research focus of this laboratory is the
role of islet beta-cell mass dynamics in the etiology of diabetes mellitus
(Diabetes 44:249-256, 1995). Specific projects include 1) an investigation
of the effects of in vivo hyperglycemia on beta-cell neogenesis,
replication and apoptosis, 2) determination of the role of beta-cell
apoptosis in the initiation of autoimmune diabetes, and 3) determination of
the role of beta-cell apoptosis in the development of Type 2 diabetes in
the Zucker Diabetic Fatty rat. Additional projects relating to glucose
effectiveness and insulin sensitivity and their role in determination of
glucose tolerance are also ongoing. Additional information can be found

Eligibility Requirements: Ph.D. or equivalent research training required.
Possible areas of expertise include: whole animal metabolic physiology, in
vivo tracer methodology, mathematical modeling, immunohistochemistry,
quantitative morphometry, cellular physiology, immunology.
Duration: 1 to 3 years. Funding is currently available, but the successful
candidate will also be expected to compete for external fellowships.
