Over the years I have found that having a nice sports coat/ jacket
(whatever you call it for women..) is a very good thing. Get one that
looks smart-- like a solid color that fits you well (eg., tailored) and
has padded shoulders.  When you get into the lab-- if you have lab
work, trade it for a lab coat.  When you have a meeting or have to
teach,-- put the jacket back on. I think many of my male colleagues do
the same...
