A position for a PhD student is available immediately at the X-ray
crystallography group of the University of Groningen to study the structure
and function of novel bacterial lytic transglycosylases involved in
bacterial cell wall assembly and maintenance. These enzymes are potential
targets for the design of novel antibiotics.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is interested to work in
a stimulating environment of structural biology research. Work and training
will involve all aspects of the project, including purification, X-ray
structure determination, inhibitor binding studies and design.

Within our laboratory excellent facilities are available, including a fully
equiped biochemistry lab, rotating anode generators, 2 MacScience Image
Plate detectors, 2 FAST area detectors and several Silicon Graphics work-
stations. The succesful candidate will become a member of the Groningen Bio-
molecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute
(http://www.gbb.chem.rug.nl), which provides an integrated graduate
training program consisting of course work, workshops and multidisciplinary
research.

Candidates should hold an undergraduate degree, such as M.Sc.,DEA, Laurea
diplom or equivalent, in biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry or a related
discipline. Strong background in structural biology and experience in
computation is desirable . Good knowledge of the english language
