How to improve xtal quality

Hi,
I am working on TMV xtallography and wanted some feedback on how to 
get good diffracting xtals.
The xtals which I have at present diffract very weakly and also do not
last long in the beam. 
I am using hanging drop method and a published recipe. Anyone
who has any suggestions can either reply directly or thru the net.
I appreciate any help.
