water molecules or sodium ions?

As far as I am aware, Na+ and K+ do not make hydrogen bonds, so if the
e.d. peak is in a good position to make hydrogen bonds, then it's water.
Also pay attention to whether it is a H-bond donor or acceptor.  This is
how one can help distinguish between =O and =NH2 on Asn and Gln side chains.
