                            Preliminary announcement

THE 4TH ACA SUMMER COURSE FOR CRYSTALLOGRAPHY, PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA
		                 AUGUST, 1995

A fourth Summer Course will be offered over the period August 1-13,
1995. As before, it will take place at the University of Pittsburgh. The
aim is to provide a group of about 30 participants with a quick intense
introduction to the basics of crystal structure determination and analysis:
how to collect single crystal X-ray diffraction data, how to use associated
software to solve and refine a crystal structure and how to analyze the
results. Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, service crystallographers
and crystallographers from corporate and other laboratories are invited to
apply for admission. Participants should have some prior experience in small-
molecule or protein crystallography as presented for example in "Crystal
Structure Analysis: A Primer" by Glusker and Trueblood.

The Course will emphasize the basics of crystallography and will be
divided approximately equally between lectures and laboratory sessions. It
will involve primarily the determination of small-molecule structures with
samples brought by participants. For those especially interested in protein
crystallography, there will be several lectures on protein crystal growth
the phase problem in macromolecular structures, but there will be no
and opportunity for practical work in this area.

In advance of the Course, participants will be provided with the
Lecture Notes from the 1994 Course, also available from Polycrystal Book
Service, (PO Box 3439, Dayton, OH 45401-3439). The University of Pittsburgh
has single-crystal diffractometers with the associated structure
determination software packages fom all three major vendors (Enraf Nonius
CAD-4; Siemens P3 and Rigaku AFC-5) and these will be used round-the-clock
throughout the Course. According to their choice of diffractometer,
participants will be assigned to a small group which will work on this
instrument under the guidance of tutors and vendor representatives.

Tuition for the Course will be $560. Three full-tuition and seven
half-tuition scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis. Air-
conditioned dormitory accommodations will be available through Pitt Student
Housing. The cost (1994 rates) will be approximately $24/day single or
$30/day double occupancy. Student housing is only a short walk from the
Department of Crystallography where the lectures will be given and an equally
short walk from the sites of all the diffractometers that will be used.

Applications should be made on forms available from Prof. Bryan Craven,
Department of Crystallography, University of Pittsburgh, PA 15260. Phone:
(412)-624-9300; FAX: (412)-624-1882. In order to be eligible for financial
assistance, an applicant must return the completed form to Prof. Craven no
  later than May 31, 1995.
