I believe you are thinking about the following article by M. Gerstein on
antibody combining sites. This is the only one I am aware of and he
hasn't published anything else on this subject.  


Gerstein, M.
     A resolution-sensitive procedure for comparing protein surfaces and its
     application to the comparison of antigen-combining sites.
   Acta Crystallographica, Section A (Foundations of Crystallography), 1 May
   1992, vol.A48, pt.3:271-6.

There are of course other papers on the principle of fourier shape
description, but, nothing from Gerstein.  Let me know if this helps.
