INSTITUTE OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY
(IMBB) HERAKLION-CRETE, GREECE

AVAILABLE POSITIONS:
One postdoctoral fellow and one graduate student.

STARTING DATE:
January 1997

RESEARCH PROJECT:
X-ray crystallographic analyses of chitinases from soil bacteria (Serratia marcescens,
Aeromonas caviae) and the extreme thermophile Streptomyces thermoviolaceus.
Analyses of the structures of enzyme complexes with substrate analogues and
inhibitors. Analyses of the structures of designed variants of chitinases with the aim to
obtain smaller, better and more stable enzymes with the natural and engineered
substrate specificity.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE:
For the postdocs: Strong background in biochemistry and X-ray crystallography of
macromolecules. Experience on modelling is considered positive.
For graduate students: Honours degree in chemistry, biology or any other related
discipline. Research experience is considered positive.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The laboratory is being well equipped with X-ray facilities and an image plate detector
system. Computing power for diffraction data processing, structure determination,
refinement and modelling is available.
Funding for the project is provided by the European Union (BIOTECH programme).
Active collaborations exist with the Biology Dept. (U. of Athens) and several other
European Laboratories. Exchange visits to carry out experiments are encouraged.
