Future opportunity for a Post-doctoral position at
Marshall Space Flight Center
The MSFC Biophysics branch will be acquiring a laboratory based ability
to study macromolecular crystals via X-ray mosaicity, reciprocal space
mapping and topography. This is in addition to a new macromolecular
structural crystallography group being set up here.
We will be seeking a post-doctoral macromolecular crystallographer with
a strong biochemical background to work in the neglected area of
crystal quality. The research will entail using several model proteins
and some systematic study of factors which lead to improved or degraded
crystal quality. This will be carried out using standard laboratory
equipment, specialized apparatus and where necessary synchrotron
sources. The development of ones own research interests, making use of
the equipment and resources available, will also be encouraged. The
position will be available for two years extendable to four with a
competitive salary.
Support will be available from an extensively equipped biochemistry
group, a developing molecular biology laboratory and machine shop
facilities. X-ray equipment includes two rotating anode sources, an
Raxis-IIC detector and a specially developed diffractometer for the
research. Computing support currently includes two Octane workstations
with over 20Gb of disk space as well as several older SG workstations.
Future plans include the development of a cryo-crystallography
capability.
Any interested person should have good experimental skills and a
willingness to develop novel approaches in instrumentation and data
analysis. Experience in macromolecular crystallography is required and
synchrotron experience would be a plus. The candidate should be able to
interact well with people of diverse skills and backgrounds. Good
interpersonal communication skills and communication are very important
to us.
Informal inquiries for full details should be made preferably by email
or phone to either
