6th Goettingen SHELX Workshop: July 7-11th 1997
-----------------------------------------------
This informal Workshop will cover all aspects of the (imminent) new release
of the SHELX programs for crystal structure determination, but will highlight
high resolution (<2A) macromolecular refinement. Participants are encouraged
to bring their own data and we plan to keep numbers small so that everyone
will have access to computing facilities. The Workshop will consist of
lectures and practical work in small groups. We hope that some participants
will give short talks on their experiences (positive or negative) in using
SHELX and related software, and that there will be plenty of opportunity
for discussion.
One day of the Workshop will be devoted to the theme 'crystallographic
software for Linux'. We will show SHELX, CCP4, AMORE, PROCHECK, XtalView,
DENZO, RASMOL and the Cambridge Structural Database running under Linux, and
participants who have developed their own crystallographic programs for Linux
will be able to make short oral presentations and demonstrate their programs.
There is no conference fee, but participants have to pay for their own food
and accommodation. Participants from abroad should plan to arrive on Sunday
July 6th, and will be able to make a start with the computing before the
first lecture, which will be at 14.00 on Monday July 7th. We have reserved 30
single rooms from 6-12 July in a new university guest house very close to the
institute; these include kitchen facilities (but not breakfast). The price is
DM 315 per room for all six days or any shorter time; as a result of a
generous donation we are able to offer a special price of DM 160 for students
and postdocs. We have also reserved a few rooms in the only nearby hotel ("am
Papenberg"). Inexpensive lunch is available in the student mensa that is also
nearby. Some travel grants for students will be available from KSAM.
If, as for previous SHELX Workshops, there are too many applicants, particip-
ants will be selected on the basis of their interests. Some crystallographic
experience (not necessarily with SHELX) is essential. Priority will be given
to candidates who have suitable data for high resolution macromolecular
refinement, or who can make interesting contributions that fit in well with
the program. To give everyone a fair chance, at least half the places will be
kept open until May 1st 1997, after which all applicants will be notified
whether they have been accepted or not.
