We're running RedHat 5.0 on Alpha/Linux (glibc). As compiler we use
egcs-1.0.2 (http://www.cygnus.com/egcs/). I use the following flags:

FOPTIM = -O5 -fomit-frame-pointer -funroll-loops -ffast-math -finline-functions -Wall
COPTIM = -O5 -Wall
XFFLAGS = -fno-second-underscore
XCFLAGS = -DPROTOTYPE -DG77
SETFLAGS = dm_FLAGS='-O0 -fno-second-underscore -funroll-all-loops -fschedule-insns'

There we're some things that had to be changed to compile. Perhaps you
should wait for the next relaese (end of April?). The CCP4 people are
making an effort to get decent g77 support.
