We are looking for someone to maintain and manage common equipment
for a group of X-ray crystallographers. Obligations will be divided
between a unix systems administrator and X-ray facility manager. We expect
these duties to occupy ~75% of the candidate's time. The remainder will be
free to pursue independent research or to assist in an ongoing project in
structural biology.
The system administrator responsibilities will involve maintenance of an
SGI cluster, including software, accounts, and installation of new
computers and peripherals. Current X-ray equipment includes a Rigaku
rotating anode X-ray generator and Raxis image plate detector system, and
we expect to purchase another data collection system shortly. X-ray lab
manager duties will include the maintenance of this equipment, and training
and oversight of students and postdocs using it.
Experience in unix system administration is required. Mechanical aptitude
is essential, however, training in the maintenance of the X-ray equipment
can be provided if necessary. Good interpersonal and communication skills
are also required.
Independent research, either computational or biochemical, will be
encouraged. Bench space and access to equipment and supplies will be
provided as necessary. The crystallography group at the University of
Chicago consists of the Moffat, Rice, Correll, and Kossiakoff laboratories.
We are interested in a variety of problems, including time-resolved X-ray
crystallography, RNA- and DNA- protein interactions, genetic recombination,
hormone receptor complexes and synthetic proteins. We are also developing
extensive facilities for synchrotron-based research in structural biology
at the Advanced Photon source, Argonne National Laboratory, located just
outside Chicago.
Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience. The University of
Chicago is located in Chicago's historic lakefront Hyde Park neighborhood,
with convenient access to downtown.
