Dear Colleagues

I have written a student friendly lab manual on using the SHELXTL (and
to a lesser extent SHELX) package of single crystal programs to solve
routine crystal structures. The table of contents and a sample chapter
from this text (i.e., on growing single crystals) are available on my
WEB site for those who are interested (i.e., at
http://www.as.ysu.edu/~adhunter/Teaching/Chem832/index.html or at
http://www.as.ysu.edu/~adhunter/YSUSC/index.html). If you decide that
you would like a full copy of the 275 page manual, please email me (from
a email server that will accept email attachments totaling about 2 MB)
and I will send you a free copy of this teaching manual as several .pdf
files if you send me your name, department, university / institution,
and job title. [Note: This manual is already being used by more than
200 individuals at about 150 different institutions so it must be of
some value!]

This WEB page (i.e., at
http://www.as.ysu.edu/~adhunter/YSUSC/index.html and at
http://www.as.ysu.edu/~adhunter/Teaching/Chem832/index.html) also
contains a draft copy of a list of text books and related materials on
various aspects of crystallography and diffraction methods. Please feel
free to look it over, use it if it seems helpful, and suggest
corrections and additions. I also welcome suggestions of WEB sites and
key educational papers on these topics that you have found interesting
for a pair of similar WEB reference lists I am also writing.

I am beginning to write a short (about 200 pages) lab text and
associated WEB site (having longer sections on special topics) on
diffraction methods for undergraduate students and "learners at
crystallography". If you have any suggestions of topics that you think
should be included but are afraid might be left out, please let me
know. Also, volunteers for writing more detailed special topics
materials and/or links (to you own WEB site) for my crystallography
education WEB site are also welcome as are volunteers to review drafts
of the text.

I am also working on a related project to develop teaching materials for
students (highschool chemistry through MS) on practical diffraction
methods (funded by NSF-DUE-CCLI-EMD #9980921). A copy of this proposal
can be found on my WEB site as well at
http://www.as.ysu.edu/~adhunter/YSUSC/index.html giving more details on
this project. If you would be interested in testing some of the
materials we develop with your students, please let me know.

Finally, I hope to be chairing sessions at two upcoming ACA and ACS
meetings in 2001 and 2002. The proposals for these sessions have been
submitted to the appropriate individuals and are working their ways
through channels. These sessions will be on crystallography /
diffraction methods education (especially for undergraduates and other
novices). If you would like to be put on my email list for these and/or
might be interesting in presenting a paper, please let me know by return
email. The Proposals are also on my WEB site (or will be by late on the
22nd) at: http://www.as.ysu.edu/~adhunter/YSUSC/index.html

Thanks for your time.

Allen
