help with sigma value in electronic maps

Hi people.
I would like to understand better the significance of the parameter sigma
in electronic density maps of proteins crystallographyc structures. How
the choose of different values alter the map? What is the difference
between two maps with different sigma values?
Any help in that regard would be greatly appreciated.
