EMBL
International Ph.D. Programme
Autumn selection

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), an international
research organisation with its Headquarters Laboratory in Heidelberg
(Germany) and outstations situated in Grenoble (France), Hamburg
(Germany) and Hinxton (UK), will award predoctoral fellowships in the
autumn 2001 to University graduates wishing to study for a Ph.D. at the
EMBL Outstation in Hamburg (Germany) or the Mouse Biology Programme
(Monterotondo, Italy).

Candidates must hold, or anticipate receiving in 2001, either a first or
upper second class honours degree, a master's degree, a diploma or
equivalent in the biological sciences, physics, chemistry, computer
science or mathematics.

The deadline for receipt of completed applications is September 2nd
2001. Interviews will be held at the different sites during the last two
weeks of September and a final admission assessment will be made in
Monterotondo on 29th September. Successful candidates will be awarded
fellowships in early October to start work no later than March 1, 2002.
The duration of a fellowship is 3.5 years. Recognizing the high quality
of the EMBL International Ph.D. Programme, EMBL became in December 1997
the first international institution providing training in Molecular
Biology in Europe to be granted the right to award its own Ph.D. degree.
Students can opt for this degree, or alternatively have to register with
one of the national universities as graduate students to obtain the
Ph.D. degree from this university or, where possible, jointly with the EMBL.
