Doctoral Studentship at the Clarendon Laboratory, University of Oxford.

An EPSRC studentship for three years leading to the degree of D.Phil. is
available from October 2003 to work in the research group of Professor Mike
Glazer. The project will be to develop an automatic system to obtain
three-dimensional optical birefringence information from crystals. The
technique will be based on a commercial system (see www.metripol.com) that
enables two-dimensional images to be formed representing magnitude and
orientation of birefringence. This project will be to develop the system to
include a computerised tilting stage and thus extract the optical
information in three dimensions. Applicants should have a degree in physics,
chemistry or materials and have an interest and aptitude in computer
programming. Good mathematical ability and a knowledge of crystals and/or
optics would be an advantage. This studentship is open to citizens of the
European Union only. Applications should be made to Professor A.M. Glazer,
Clarendon Laboratory, Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3PU, United Kongdom: email
glazer at physics.ox.ac.uk.
