Structure Factors before 1960

Dear Stan,

I didn't start crystallography until well into the 1960's, but often heard
Arnold Beevers talking about the "old days". I think that, since structure
factor calculation (especially in two dimensions) is fairly trivail compared to
Fourier calculation, people didn't bother too much about devising clever
methods. Kathleen Lonsdale's tables, which fill so much of the old Int Tab
Volume I, were designed to simplify direct calculation.

Strips (e.g. the Beevers Lipson type) could be used, since the SF and
Fourier calculations are so similar, but I expect most people didn't bother,
considering the relatively small number of atoms and reflections they were
working with.

All the best
