X8-C Beamline Scientist Position at NSLS

The Participating Research Team that operates beamline X8-C at NSLS,
Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY, is seeking a Beamline Scientist
to oversee operation and maintenance of the beamline, and to provide
technical assistance to the users in the area of macromolecular
crystallography (data collection, processing, structure solving). This
person also will have an opportunity to participate in the research
programs of PRT members. The PRT is a mix of academic and industrial
partners, and comprises four members: Consortium of Canadian
Crystallographers (represented by NRC), the PXRR group of BNL's Biology
Dept., Hoffman-LaRoche, and Biogen. A full description of the facility
can be found here: http://www.x8c.nsls.bnl.gov

Description:

The Beamline Scientist will join the Beamline Operator in maintaining the
beamline in excellent technical condition. He/she will provide leadership
in maintaining state-of-the-art capabilities of the X8-C beamline for
protein crystallography, and in designing innovative ways of data
collection. The Scientist will participate in the research projects
conducted at the beamline, and will be encouraged to apply for independent
funding of his own research. He/she will have a close relationship with
the Macromolecular Crystallography Research Resource (PXRR), more
information about which can be found http://www.px.nsls.bnl.gov

The responsibilities include conducting experiments to evaluate and
maintain optimal performance of the beamline, implementing improvements
and automation for increased efficiency, documenting procedures, and
providing user support. Together with the Beamline Operator he/she will
align beamline optics, perform energy calibrations and beam
characterizations, and troubleshoot beamline instrumentation. In addition,
the Beamline Scientist will ensure compliance by the beamline personnel
with policies, standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements of the
NSLS.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in physics, biochemistry, chemistry,
or a related field, and extensive experience in crystallography.
Experience with synchrotron radiation and beamline instrumentation as a
user or operator is necessary. Knowledge of methods of macromolecular
crystallography is very desirable. Some experience in handling a modern
Unix-based scientific computing environment is required.
