                 POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS-SAN DIEGO

Two postdoctoral positions are available in the laboratory of Nigel
Crawford, Dept. of Biology, University of California at San Diego. Our
group has been investigating ion transport, nitrate reduction, metabolite
control, signal transduction and gene regulation in the nitrate
assimilation pathway of Arabidopsis using molecular genetic and biochemical
approaches. The ability to isolate mutants that are blocked in the nitrate
assimilation pathway using the herbicide chlorate has led to identification
of nine genes so far with many more yet to be uncovered. Using chlorate
selections, we recently cloned a nitrate-inducible nitrate transporter gene
(Cell, vol. 72, 705-713, 3/12/93) and an active endogenous transposable
element Tag1 (Science, vol. 260, 342-344, 4/16/93) from Arabidopsis.
Future projects include (1) identifying additional nitrate transporter
genes from Arabidopsis and characterizing the structure, function and
regulation of their products, (2) characterizing all the members of the Tag
transposon family and studying the developmental regulation of their
transposition, (3) identifying new transposons using our cloned chlorate
resistance genes as traps and (4) investigating the regulation of nitrate
reductase gene expression at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional
level (especially the role of phosphorylation of the enzyme). Our group
works closely with the other plant biology labs in our building headed by
Drs. Julian Schroeder, Bob Schmidt, Marty Yanofsky and Maarten Chrispeels.
In addition to weekly journal clubs at UCSD, we participate in monthly
meetings with all the plant biology groups in the San Diego area (includes
UCSD, Salk, Scripps Clinic and SDSU). Starting date for these positions is
flexible but targeted for January 1, 1994. If interested, please contact
