Glucose reppression of gal promoters

Is the gal promoter-essential gene construct on a 2u plasmid?  If so and if
the gene pproduct is only needed in small quantities, the less stringent 
control of gal promoters on high-copy vectors might be causing the problem,
especially if your friend is doing the lethal switch on plates instead of 
liquid.
