inconsistence in liquid and plate killing

Dear yeast netters:
Does anyone have a good explanation or clue why some yeast strains
show a strong killing on plate but not in liquid culture condition? In
particular, we have cloned two new genes whose mutants are sensitive to a
drug. Mutant 1 is more sensitive to mutant 2 on plate, but less sensitive
in liquid killing experiment. These are gene-specific disruption mutants
in the same strain.
