highschool experiments I
     We developed two yeast strains for use in simple highschool genetics
experiments.  MAT@::URA3 his3 Lys2 trp1 tyr7 ura3 cyh2r
              MATa       his4      trp1      ura3       ade2 arg4
Several principles can be demonstrated.  Life cycle: the parents mate
with testers of the opposite mating type but the diploid formed between
them does not (but will sporulate).  Complementation:  both parents are
His- but the diploid is His+.  Dominant versus recessive characters:
Lys+, Ade+, Arg+, Tyr+, Ura+ are all dominant.  CyhR and the red pigment
caused by the Ade2 mutation are recessive.  Random spores are easy to find
just streak the spores out and look for recovering the red (ade2) mutation
Among red spores at least 32 different kinds of strains can be recovered
demonstrating genetic reassortment.  Genetic linkage is demonstrated by
the close linkage of MAT@ and Ura+.  JEFF
