Taste of Pombe beer

Hello,
I would like to clarify a comment in P. Lindner's paper (1893) regarding
the taste of Pombe beer, as described in
http://www.nih.gov/sigs/yeast/life/lindner2.html
In the article, Lindner quotes the article of Dr. D. Saare from three
years earlier (1890) in which the latter describes the taste to be
'arcidulous,...,rotten, and not particularly pleasant.'
After receiving this 1890 article yesterday, it became clear that Saare
was describing the sample that he had received from East Africa and that
had been underway from March 26 till April 29, 1890 before arriving in
Germany. The taste of fresh Pombe beer, however, was quite different:
Major Wissmann described that his men liked Pombe beer very much and
considered it a healthy refreshing beverage (alcohol content of Pombe beer
was 2.4%).
Sorry for any confusion the translation may have caused; I will add an
editorial note in the next update.
Yours, ---Frans
