E. coli mutator strains

The XL-1 Red strain dies very quickly.  Plates last a few days in the refrigerator!
An undergrad in my lab prepared DNA from the cells, but we have not determined the
frequency of mutagenesis or the rate with which we recover our "desired" mutant.
I think it is probably very important how one grows the mutated "pool" and it is
also important to determine, independent of phenotype, that you are generating mutants.
