Grow the cultures to about 0.7, then do the assays and let them
incubate overnight before stopping the reaction. You can tell the difference
between 0 and 0.1 units (i.e., both white on the filter assay) easily this
way.
By the way, Whatman #50 works for the filter assay--you don't need
to use nitrocellulose. **Thanks for the tip!***
