POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
EVOLUTIONARY GENOMICS
A twoyear, NSFfunded Postdoctoral position beginning
September 15, 2000, in the Department of Zoology, University of
Washington, Seattle, will be available to study evolutionary
genetics of disease resistance, with possible extension to a third
year. The general goal of the research is to begin to develop house
finches (Carpodacus mexicanus), a common North American
songbird, as a genetic model organism. The specific goal will be to
conduct linkage , association and mapping studies to identify
QTLs, including major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes, for
resistance to infection by Mycoplasma. The successful applicant
will have an interest in evolution and in applying one or more of the
following skills to this problem: largescale surveys of ESTs,
radiation hybrid mapping, tissue culture/FISH, genomic cloning and
sequencing, or generation of AFLP or microsatellite markers.
