TWO RESEARCH ASSOCIATE POSITIONS

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE #1
The Division of Gene Function & Expression at the University of
Massachusetts Medical School is recruiting for a Research
Associate who will manage and supervise the care, maintenance
and husbandry of mutant and transgenic zebrafish lines.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for independently managing a zebrafish facility.
Responsible for the maintenance of mutant and transgenic
zebrafish lines. Assist PI in the establishment, maintenance and
backup of fish facility databases. Isolate and purify DNA from
zebrafish embryos and adult finclips. Perform polymerase chain
reaction (PCR) to identify mutant or transgenic carrier zebrafish
Identify mutant or transgenic carriers by crossing and phenotypic
scoring of resulting embryos. Perform microinjection of DNA
constructs into zebrafish embryos to establish stable transgenic
lines. Perform techniques for cryopreservation of mutant or
transgenic zebrafish lines. Perform in vitro fertilization using adult
zebrafish. Assists PI in preparation and renewal of animal
protocols. Complies with all safety and infection control standards
appropriate to this position. Performs other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Knowledge/Experience: Bachelors degree in Biology, Fisheries
Science, or Aquaculture and 1 years relevant research in the field.
2. Skills: Knowledge of genetics, cell biology and molecular
biology. Proficient computer skills. Management /training skills.
Ability to interact with departmental and institutional offices.

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE #2
The Division of Gene Function and Expression, at the University of
Massachusetts Medical School, is currently recruiting for a
researcher to perform a variety of laboratory experiments on
zebrafish embryos to study molecular processes that govern
embryonic blood vessel development.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for managing everyday aspects of the lab, including,
but not limited to: ordering, inventory, maintaing stock reagents,
maintanence and backup of laboratory databases. Perform
experiments associated with the genetic characterization of mutant
and transgenic zebrafish lines. Isolate and purify DNA from
zebrafish embryos and finclips. Isolate large insert constructs from
genomic libraries using radiolabeled DNA probes. Perform
polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Perform Northern and Southern
blot hybridization using radiolabled probes. Perform whole mount in
situ hybridization of RNA probes to zebrafish embryos. Sequence
purified DNA. Performs subcloning and other standard recombinant
DNA procedures as required. Performs immunoprecipitation and
Western blot analysis using zebrafish embryo extracts.
Responsible for managing lab in compliance with institutional
regulations (radiation safety, chemical safety).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Knowledge/Experience: Equivalent to a Bachelors degree in
Biology and 1 year full time relevant research in the field.
2. Skills: Knowledge of basic genetics, cell biology and molecular
biology. Proficient computer skills. Management/training skills.
Ability to interact with departmental and institutional offices.
3. Physical Requirements: Manual dexterity to handle potentially
hazardous chemicals and/or cleaners. Visual acuity to perform
duties safely in a scientific laboratory.
