A postdoctoral position is available to study C. elegans bah genes.
When C. elegans is exposed to the bacterium Yersinia pestis, the cause of
bubonic plague, the worm head becomes covered by a biofilm that blocks
feeding (Nature 2002, 417:243). This is a model for the
mechanism by which the bacteria colonize their natural vector, the flea.
The Darby lab is characterizing C. elegans mutants that are Bah --
biofilm absent on head (International Worm Meeting 2003, abstract 288).
The lab, which also studies other interactions between nematodes and
bacteria, is in the Department of Microbiology, University of Alabama at
Birmingham.
Molecular biology experience is essential, and experience with C. elegans
or another model genetic system is highly desirable. Please send email
containing CV, PDF reprints, contact information for
references, and a brief description of previous and current research to
creg at uab.edu.
