Dear colleagues,

please find below an advert for eight new independent junior groups, 
tenure track,  in a newly established Center for Stem Cell and 
Regeneration Research in Dresden, Germany.

The new DFG Research Center Regenerative Therapies Dresden focuses on 
fundamental research into Regeneration, Tissue Engineering  and Stem 
Cells. In a joint effort of several scientific institutions in Dresden, 
it forms a network of currently 54 research groups plus commercial 
partners, working in the areas of Haematology/ Oncology, Diabetes, 
Neurodegenerative disorders, Bone/Cartilage replacement and 
Cardiovascular disease. Available immediately, we offer positions of 
limited duration for

8  Junior Research Group Leaders
and
1 Scientific Project Coordinator.

Applicants are expected to have an outstanding international scientific 
qualification in biomedical research. Remuneration is offered in 
accordance with the salary scale BAT-O Ia; individual salaries depend 
on the candidates' personal and educational background and work 
experience.

The Junior Research Groups will run for 6 years. They are subject to a 
time limit, which is 31 December 2009. Prior to the expiration of the 
contract, an evaluation is conducted to assess further extension of the 
contract and the conversion of 3 of the 8 Group Leader positions into 
permanent W2 professorships (tenure track option). Each group consists 
of the position for the group leader, one postdoc, one PhD student and 
one technical assistant. The basic equipment and running costs are 
available. Together with 3 additional new professorships, the new 
junior research groups will be housed in a new state-of-the-art 
building equipped with a shared central technology platform. The new 
building will be located next to the BIOTECnology Center of the TUD
() and the Max-Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics 
() on the Medical School Campus. Key avenues for research efforts in 
the new center will complement the existing strengths.

The Research Center is particularly interested to appoint group leaders 
working in the following areas:

•  Animal models of regeneration (J1). The goal is to understand 
regeneration in relation to progenitor cell development in vertebrate 
model organisms and tissues that have, as a natural phenomenon, 
excellent abilities to regenerate, e.g. amphibians or zebrafish.
  •  Preclinical approaches of stem cells in regenerative therapy  (J2). 
The goal is to perform translational research for specific stem cell 
types that are approaching use for human clinical therapy, e.g. 
mesenchymal stem cells and neural stem cells.
  •  Cell biological basis of stem cell/progenitor cell development (J3, 
J4). Recognizing the overwhelming need for better understanding of cell 
biological mechanisms in stem cell activity for all research areas, 
these research teams will specifically investigate critical mechanisms 
controlling stem cell activity.
  •  Engineering of stem cell behavior using materials science 
approaches (J5, J6). The goal is to understand and engineer scaffolds 
and matrices mimicking the extracellular environment that either 
support or prevent regeneration/stem cells, and to model this 
environment in suitable in vivo assays.
  •  Nanotechnological control/engineering of tissue regeneration (J7). 
The goal will be to achieve specific engineering and nanotechnological 
designs of e.g. functionalized surfaces, microvalves and controllable 
hydrogels that allow a spatial and temporal specific stimulation of 
stem cell populations.
  •  Immunotolerance in regeneration (J8). Host immune reactions are a 
serious problem in type I diabetes and transplantation of organs, stem 
cells or engineered tissues alike. Using animal models, the group will 
research immunological and genetic means of inducing immunotolerance, 
e.g. by selective epitope or reactive lymphocyte elimination.

The Scientific coordinator's position is initially for 2 years – with 
the possibility of renewal. The Scientific coordinator will support the 
speaker by coordinating the scientific and administrative tasks in the 
CRTD. The applicant will typically have a PhD and postdoctoral 
experience related to one of the subject areas of the CRTD, strong 
communicative and organizational skills and ideally administrative 
experience.
