Diana,
As someone who has worked with both species, I don't think it would be
too great a risk. Common pathogens for Xenopus include Mycobacterium
species (although this is true more for X. tropicalis, a tropical
species with a temperature optimum of 25 degrees, than for X. laevis,
which prefer colder water), nematodes (which I haven't heard cause
problems in fish) and red-leg, a bacterial disease caused by Aeromonas
and Pseudomonas species. In this case, there may be the potential for
problems, since these bacteria can also cause infections in fish.
However, in my experience, most of these infections are opportunistic,
and don't really cause problems unless the frogs or fish are stressed by
something else.
Of course, even a little risk could be too great if there is another way
to resolve the problem. That, I guess, depends on the institute and on
the investigators involved. Good luck with sorting things out.
Nick
