Functions of the Newsgroup: The purpose of BIOCAN is to facilitate rapid, interactive communication among members of the Canadian bioscience community. Canadian bioscientists can use this forum to solicit advice and information from their colleagues in all biological disciplines. This forum is based upon the principle that collegiality and interdisciplinary cooperation facilitate scientific progress. Electronic interaction is tailor-made for the Canadian bioscience community, which is spread over a vast geography. It will also enable the CFBS office to rapidly disseminate information to Canadian bioscientists and for individual bioscientists to comment on any aspect of CFBS, granting agency, or government science policy. Information exchanged can include: 1) scientific dialogue (either intra- or inter-disciplinary); 2) announcements of upcoming meetings and conferences of interest; 3) news of general interest to the Canadian bioscience community; 4) announcements of academic positions and job opportunities; 5) discussion of CFBS policy initiatives; 6) CFBS science policy reports; 7) information on granting agency policies; 8) reports on CFBS Annual Meeting and on meetings of constituent societies; 9) comments on proposed federal and provincial legislation and policy initiatives. All members of CFBS constituent societies are encouraged to subscribe. Contributions within the above guidelines are welcome. Moderation Policy: Mass-posted commercial messages, chain letters, and similar postings not germane to the Canadian bioscience community will be deleted without comment. Inappropriate messages posted in good faith will be returned to the sender. Messages not strictly within the charter but likely to be of interest to many subscribers (e.g., messages dealing with the international bioscience community) will be accepted. Use of the newsgroup for commercial purposes is prohibited. Neil Haave, Ph.D. Augustana University College Camrose, AB T4V 2R3 CANADA haavn@augustana.ab.ca
